With the "Sion", the company Sono Motors presented the first series-ready solar e-car.The model is scheduled to go into series production in the second half of 2023.Stuttgart/Munich - In Germany there is currently a discussion about whether, in addition to electric cars, vehicles with fuel cells or synthetic fuels may still be sold after 2035.What is certain, however, is that battery-powered models are currently receiving the most attention in the automotive industry. The Munich-based company Sono Motors, which actually produces solar solutions, presented the world premiere of the "Sion", the first series-ready and affordable e-car with solar integration. The world novelty from Germany will soon go into series production, writes BW24.In view of the still insufficiently developed charging infrastructure for e-cars in Germany, a model that can draw electricity from solar energy is an important step on the way to the age of e-mobility.The integration of solar cells in battery-powered cars is not entirely new.The super e-car EQXX from Mercedes-Benz, which recently broke its own range record, can, for example, feed auxiliary consumers such as the navigation system via integrated solar cells in the roof. However, the "Sion" from Sono Motors is said to be the first real production car to focus on solar technology. As a young company based in Munich, Sono Motors naturally has strong competition in the field of e-mobility.Not only the traditional German groups Mercedes-Benz, BMW and VW are focusing on electric cars, the industry leader Tesla has also been producing in Germany since the end of March. At the "Celebrate the Sun" community event on July 25 in the Bavarian state capital, the company also presented the final design study of an electric car, but with the main focus on solar technology."We are extremely excited as Sono Motors continues on its journey to bringing clean, affordable and accessible solar mobility to the masses," said Sono Motors CEO and co-founder Laurin Hahn, according to a press release. So far known key data of the "Sion" solar car from Sono Motors:However, solar mobility is not another potential alternative to e-mobility, the “Sion” will essentially be an e-car that can also be charged at charging stations like one.Over short distances, however, 456 solar half-cells integrated into the outer skin of the vehicle enable autonomous energy supply."We have integrated solar cells into the entire body - and that is completely new," said Laurin Hahn in an interview with Capital."Building a normal electric vehicle isn't that special anymore," added Lars Löhle, also CEO and co-founder of Sono Motors. In the field of solar-powered cars, the Munich-based company has actually had a unique selling point. The solar car for only 6,000 euros from the Dutch manufacturer Squad Mobility is a combination of scooter and small car, for which you don't even need a driver's license. In contrast, the Sion from Sono Motors, which is scheduled to start production in the second half of 2023, should be a fully-fledged electric car in the mid-range segment that offers space for the whole family.According to the press release, more than 19,000 private reservations for the Sion had already been received by July 1, 2022.Next, the company plans to test the model in both Europe and the United States.“We already had several generations of test vehicles and are now in the so-called series validation phase, so we will soon be doing crash tests, for example, and testing the cars in summer and winter,” Laurin Hahn told Capital. The founders seem convinced of the success of the first production-ready solar car."Combustion engines are a thing of the past, electric cars are the present," Hahn made clear."And we are convinced that solar electric cars like the Sion are the future and can trigger the next big wave in mobility."
