Sep. 15—WILLIMANTIC — Installation of solar panels on the new senior/community center roof is scheduled to begin next week. The building, which opened in May, is at 1 Jillson Square.

Windham Mayor Thomas DeVivo said the installation is scheduled to begin Monday and workers will start with the Valley Street side.

He said attachments have already been placed on the roof.

"That has to cure for seven days," DeVivo said.

He said the town will be buying the electricity from Greenskies, who are installing the panels. The ad-hoc senior/ community center building committee, which DeVivo is co-chairman of, is not overseeing the project. The building committee recently voted not to disband because they felt there was more work to do. DeVivo said there are still a lot of minor items to get finished in the building.

Two electric car charging stations have already been installed at the building.

DeVivo said the stations are "pretty fancy.' The senior center project is one of several solar projects planned by the town.

Titan Energy was hired as a consultant by the town to manage solar projects for the town.

Solar panels are also being installed over the parking lots in the front of the wastewater treatment plant and other parts of the property.

U.S. climate envoy John Kerry cautioned against investing in long-term gas projects in Africa as countries in the region, some hoping to tap recent oil and gas discoveries, wrestle with how to power their development with clean energy. "We are not saying no gas," Kerry told Reuters on the sidelines of an African environment ministers' conference in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday. But after 2030, it will be important to capture the emissions from gas too, Kerry added.
