Adams — Governor Charlie Baker, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Beth Card, and Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Commissioner Doug Rice joined state and local officials in the Town of Adams in a ceremonial groundbreaking event to celebrate the start of construction of the Greylock Glen Outdoor Recreation and Nature Center. Since July 2021, the state has provided over $9 million in bond funding to advance the project, which will provide significant regional economic and recreational benefits. The building project is expected to be completed in 2023.

“The Greylock Glen Outdoor Recreation and Nature Center serves as a great example of state and local officials and key stakeholders partnering together on a project that will be a tremendous asset for many years to come,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “We are pleased to see the construction of the center, which will provide great access to natural resources and increase tourism in the area.”

“By continuing to protect and enhance the Commonwealth’s natural resources, our Administration is ensuring that future generations will greatly benefit from the actions we are taking today,” said Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. “The Greylock Glen Outdoor Recreation and Nature Center will not only expand access to the surrounding environment, but will also provide exceptional educational opportunities and instill passion for the environment in those who will visit this special place.”

The Greylock Glen Outdoor Recreation and Nature Center will be a 10,000 square foot building that will serve as a hub for exploration within Greylock Glen and into DCR’s Mount Greylock State Reservation. The center will include:

“Projects like the Greylock Glen Outdoor Recreation and Nature Center strengthen the bonds between communities and their local environment, providing great benefits to local residents and businesses” said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Beth Card. “The Baker-Polito Administration is proud to partner with the community, elected officials, and local stakeholders in order to construct the center, which we believe will be an invaluable regional resource.”

“The Baker-Polito Administration has tasked DCR with protecting and enhancing the state’s natural and recreational resources to encourage stewardship of our open, green spaces,” said Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Doug Rice. “The new Greylock Glen Outdoor Recreation and Nature Center will support this mission by increasing access and inspiring exploration of the surrounding area for people of all ages.”

Since 2006, DCR and the Town of Adams have collaborated on the design and permitting of a proposed $50 million Greylock Glen Resort, which the new center will be part of. Additionally, the new center, which was designed by Maclay Architects, will be carbon zero through the installation of several green building practices, such as:

“The Outdoor Center at Greylock Glen will be the first opportunity for Adams to begin realizing the economic impact of outdoor recreation, which is part of the Town’s multi-faced approach to developing our tourism economy,” said Adams Town Administration Jay Green. “Every component of the Greylock Glen Resort project will contribute not only to the local tax base and generate other income for the Town, but also for the Northern Berkshire Region by expanding the portfolio of attractions, which will make this region a destination and multiply the economic impact for our communities. Adams is grateful for the support of the Baker-Polito Administration in helping our community to realize this endeavor.”

“This beautiful tract of land at the base of Mt. Greylock will soon become a premier destination for outdoor recreation, ecotourism, and environmental education,” said State Representative John Barrett III (D-North Adams). “Greylock Glen will create new jobs and be the catalyst that will drive the Northern Berkshire economy for years to come. I commend Governor Baker and his administration for understanding the importance of the Greylock Glen to the future economic growth of outdoor recreation in Berkshire County.”

“Mount Greylock has gone too long without the infrastructure investments that will allow the region to become a true hub for outdoor recreation,” said State Senator Adam Hinds (D-Pittsfield). “I am excited this project truly starts to create a strong regional draw that will allow for further investments.”

Greylock Glen is located at the base of Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts, and is comprised of over 1,000 acres that abuts DCR’s 12,500-acre Mount Greylock State Reservation. The area includes an extensive trail network through open fields and wooded hillsides. Recreational opportunities within the area include scenic views, hiking, camping, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Following the completion of the center, the building will be the first component of the Town of Adams’ proposed Greylock Glen Resort, a recreational destination development at the foot of Mount Greylock that is meant to attract visitors to the area, which will greatly benefit the local and regional economy.
