Fairfax County police asked people to shelter in place after two cars were hit by gunfire in a Starbucks parking lot in the Baileys Crossroads area, as authorities believe the shots might have been fired by someone in a nearby high-rise apartment building, using a high-powered rifle. No injuries have been reported, police said.

A man was walking outside the Starbucks in the 3500 block of South Jefferson St. around 11:15 a.m., when a bullet shattered the window of a vehicle in the parking lot, said Lt. Dan Spital, a Fairfax County police spokesman.

Soon after, a second shot hit the same vehicle and a third hit another car, Spital said. No one was in either vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Spital said investigators believe the rounds were likely fired from a high-rise apartment building across the street at 5599 Seminary Road. The building is part of the Skyline Towers complex.

“We believe it was high-powered rifle rounds fired toward the parking lot of Starbucks,” Spital said.

The area is full of busy shops and restaurants, and video circulating on social media showed a significant police response, including armored vehicles. No shots have been fired since the initial burst of gunfire.

Spital said investigators are trying to determine the exact location within the large apartment building where the shots were fired from. He said some officers are inside the building, but they have not initiated a general search.

Spital said police have not recovered a weapon and have not taken anyone in custody. Spital said investigators do not have any indication the man in the Starbucks parking lot was the target of the shooting.

No injuries have been reported and no additional shots fired. Officers continue to search the nearby area. Please continue to avoid the area, stay sheltered in place and follow police direction.

Police are asking residents to avoid the area. Police said Route 7 was closed as the investigation continues.
