Polestar has announced rolling updates for its 2 sedan, featuring new design-focused tweaks as well as improved construction processes shaving extra amounts from its carbon footprint.

The bad news is the updated version will carry a hefty price hike, with the base Standard Range Single Motor moving from $59,900 before on-road costs, to $63,900 (an increase of $4000), matching to the dollar its key Tesla Model 3 rival.

Moving further up the range, the Long Range Single Motor now wears an MSRP of $68,400 (an increase of $3500), while the top-spec Long Range Dual Motor now wears a price-tag of $73,400 (another $3500 increase).

There are no changes to driving range, which sits at 470km for the Standard Range, 540km for the Long Range, and 480km for the Long Range Dual Motor.

Front-wheel-drive versions produce 170kW/330Nm, while the top-spec Dual Motor can produce 300kW/660Nm.

Design updates for what is being called the model year 2023 Polestar 2 include two new exterior colours, two fresh 19- and 20-inch alloy wheel designs, a new interior colour scheme with Nappa leather upholstery, and a removable sunshade for models equipped with the panoramic glass roof (a notable omission from the original car), which will also be available as an accessory to existing Polestar 2 owners.

The heat pump and cabin air filters (available on cars with the Plus Pack) have also been tweaked for the updated car, with the pump featuring a new optimal temperature range for better efficiency. There is now an upgraded interior particulate matter sensor for the car, with a new in-car app that analyses air quality.

There are no additions to the standard safety features list for the updated models.

The updated Polestar 2 has a new interior colour scheme with Nappa leather upholstery.

While the price seems to have risen for little feature improvement, Polestar says the 2 is now more sustainable than ever.

Updated models trace more raw materials used in their construction, and a new choice of aluminium supplier which uses exclusively renewable energy in its smelting is said to further reduce its CO2 footprint by up to 750kg per car for the battery cage, and a further 600kg for the new ‘low carbon’ alloy wheels, for a total CO2 reduction of 1350kg per car compared to the outgoing version.

According to Polestar’ Australia, placing an order for the updated car now will ensure November delivery, while the brand’s local division also confirmed the pricing increase was due to supply chain issues that are affecting almost every automaker.

2022 will see the reveal of the brand’s next model, the Polestar 3, a performance SUV in the vein of the Porsche Cayenne, while 2023 will see the release of the Porsche-Macan-sized Polestar 4 SUV, as the Volvo spin-off EV maker looks to establish itself as a major global premium player.
